Rest is a Growth Strategy
Nurturing and healing yourself is an investment.
Have you ever caught up with someone you haven’t seen in a while and they say “What’s been happening with you?” We feel compelled to give them a highlight reel. Tell them about the absolute best, most fun and exciting parts of our life. If we don’t have anything to update we feel like we haven’t been doing anything. We feel almost a sense of laziness, as if nothing is achieved.
We are constantly measured by the success metric. Excellence in what we achieve personally and professionally. I grew up with parents who would compare me against others constantly when I didn’t get perfect grades or achieve as much. I’ve realised this is toxic behaviour and I’ve later learned to heal from it. We wear exhaustion and busyness as a badge of honour. I know I personally have been measured on my capability in a work context based on my ability to juggle more tasks and if I’m placed on high profile projects.
The reality is measuring success based on external factors such as what you own, or earn, or your job title won’t make you happier in the long run.
Rest is a great growth strategy. Nurturing and healing yourself is an investment. Rest can help you grow by getting to know yourself better, helping you to discover hidden skills and desires. It can help you become more confident and increase self esteem. Take some time off and enjoy yourself. Rest can look like:
- Going for a walk
- Reading a book
- Indulging in Netflix
- Meditating and yoga
- Eating something delicious
- Being creative
- Listening to music
You deserve all the rest you need and want without justifying it to anyone. Do the things you enjoy for you.
Let’s wear being well rested, wholeness and self love as a badge of honour instead of busyness and exhaustion.
